Toxigenic cyanobacteria are photosynthetic prokaryotes that are most often recognizedin marine and freshwater systems, such as lakes, ponds, rivers, and estuaries. Whenenvironmentalconditions (such as light, nutrients, water column stability, etc.) aresuitable for their growth, cyanobacteria may proliferate and form toxic blooms in theupper, sunlit layers. The biology andecology of cyanobacteria have been extensivelystudied throughout the world during the last twodecades, but we still know little aboutthe factors and processes involved in regulating toxinproduction for many cyanobacterialspecies. In this minireview, we discuss these microorganisms, and more especially thetoxins they produce, as a potential and important health risk for wild anddomesticanimals. |
